The BEA kids also participate in our “self-development workshops.” Once a month, the directors, staff and students join together in student-led discussions in Khmer on a designated topic. The purpose of this program is to improves the students’ self-confidence and eliminate their “poverty complex.” These workshops provide students with a larger forum to discuss these problems and learn how to address such personal challenges. Sadly, many of our students start their studies at BEA with little self-worth due to their impoverished backgrounds. So far, our annual student evaluations have revealed that the BEA kids feel more positive about themselves and this has helped them with their family life and studies. Themes of past workshops have include bullying, self-esteem, family alcoholism, poverty, and volunteer work.
All of us at BEA would like to give a special thanks to the Sault Ste. Marie Algoma Family Services for providing us with the guidance and resources to set-up these workshops.
