One of the most important workshops that the BEA students participant are the Job Skills Workshops throughout their year-long program. Since all of our students come from families making less than $2.00 US per day, many of them have to work to help support their family and to pay for their public school fees. Since Siem Reap is a major tourist destination, many students would like to work in the tourist industry since it provides higher-paying salaries and safer working conditions.
To help the BEA kids find work in the tourist industry, we have intensive resume writing and interview skills workshops. In the resume and cover letter writing workshop, students learn how to describe their educational experiences, qualifications and qualities, as well as learn the differences between resume formats between Cambodia and countries like the Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. By the end of the two-week workshop, students turn in their own cover letters and resumes, which they can then use to apply for jobs. In the interview skills workshops, students learn how to perform in a job interview. They learn how to answer interview questions, how to dress appropriately, and how to use body language effectively. They work in groups to prepare a resume and then answer questions about it in mock interviews with their classmates.
For these workshops, BEA uses its own writing textbooks and teacher manuals, which are available on our website for other Cambodian teachers and students to use. These have been designed specially for the Cambodian classroom.
