BEA students also participate in a writing exchange program with Nicole’s Japanese students at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo. Over 5 years, 200 students have participated in this program. The BEA students are from the Intermediate and Pre-Intermediate courses while the Japanese students are from Nicole's Integrated English course and Intercultural Communication seminar in the English Literature Department. Students exchange three letters with their partners on (1) lifestyle, (2) cultural practices, and (3) educational institutions and experiences. Many of the students say the project is a "precious experience" and it helps them to decrease their stereotypes.
The results of this program will be published in Nicole's upcoming book chapter Throwing away stereotypes: Deepening intercultural understanding through Cambodia-Japan letter exchanges. It explains how Japanese learners become aware of their stereotypes, and increased their intercultural awareness through only a few limited interactions with their Cambodian writing partner. Her chapter will appear in Voices from the TESOL classroom: Participant inquiries in higher educationclasses with TESOL this September 2016.
