In addition to our English language program, we run "self-development workshops" each month at BEA. They're quite different from our language program since these are actually run in the students' first language, Khmer, and address common obstacles that face all of our students. We decided to introduce these workshops since students often discussed or wrote about causes of stress in their daily lives in their language classes. These workshops provide students with a larger forum to discuss these problems and learn how to address such personal challenges. For our last self-deveopment workshop, students reflected on all of the themes they had discussed throughout the year, and discussed which ones helped them the most in their daily lives. For our upcoming self-development workshops during the first semester of the 2014-15 school year, we'll be taking a look at children's rights, self-esteem and family alcoholism. Besides our English language program, the BEA kids also participate in our “self-development workshops.” Once a month, the directors, staff and students join together in student-led discussions in Khmer on a designated topic. In the past, topics have included goal-setting, discrimination, volunteerism, and many others. The topic for May’s self-development workshop was “how to build self-value.” Part of the workshop included our staff sharing how BEA helped them in the personal and professional lives The purpose of this program is to improves the students’ self-confidence and eliminate their “poverty complex.” Sadly, many of our students start their studies at BEA with little self-worth due to their impoverished backgrounds. So far, our annual student evaluations have revealed that the BEA kids feel more positive about themselves and this has helped them with their family life and studies. We’re planning to expand this program for the 2014-15 school year. Our first semester themes will include BEA’s Child Protection Policy, bullying and family alcoholism. We’re really excited to hear what the BEA kids will have to say about those issues.
