Teacher Shally's Graduation Party

28/8/2014

The BEA staff is like one big family. We share in each other's joys and sorrows. Today, we got to share in the joy of Teacher Shally's university graduation. After his commencement ceremony and a celebratory lunch, the staff held a small party for him in the BEA library this afternoon. His party, not surprisingly, had plenty plenty of laughter, smiles and goofiness.

Happy Graduation Teacher Shally!

All the BEA staff and students would like to wish Teacher Shally congratulations on his graduation from university.  He completed his undergraduate degree in Business Administration at the University of Southeast Asia (USEA) in September 2011, and USEA finally held his commencement ceremony this morning.  Teacher Shally is now an official university graduate! He’s definitely put his degree to good use as BEA’s managing director and head teacher during the past four years. We’re so proud of all of your accomplishments, and how you achieved your success through hard work and never compromising your integrity. We appreciate all the sacrifices you have made to help all of us each and every single day at BEA. You’re our hero Teacher Shally!  Congratulations!!!

Highlights from 2013-14: Farewell to BEA

23/8/2014

One of the most difficult poster presentations is the "Farewell to BEA" theme for the Advanced EFL course students. This is especially tough since students will have to say goodbye to BEA once they have finished the Advanced course. Nevertheless, this presentations allows them to chance reflect on their time at BEA, and then present on how their lives changed during their time with us. For this year's topics, students explained how BEA played a role in helping them improve their English language skills, make friends, set goals, and become culturally aware.  Despite the smiles, there are always a few tears by the end of the last presentation. However, our students leave us knowing that they have the confidence and language skills to help themselves and make it on their own.

Highlights from 2013-14: Self-Development Workshops

In addition to our English language program, we run "self-development workshops" each month at BEA.  They're quite different from our language program since these are actually run in the students' first language, Khmer, and address common obstacles that face all of our students. We decided to introduce these workshops since students often discussed or wrote about causes of stress in their daily lives in their language classes.  These workshops provide students with a larger forum to discuss these problems and learn how to address such personal challenges. For our last self-deveopment workshop, students reflected on all of the themes they had discussed throughout the year, and discussed which ones helped them the most in their daily lives. For our upcoming self-development workshops during the first semester of the 2014-15 school year, we'll be taking a look at children's rights, self-esteem and family alcoholism.

Highlights from 2013-14: Heading to the Olympics

One of the most popular presentation themes that the BEA kids enjoy from year to year is on Olympic sports.  Unfortunately, there is no official Olympic team that represents any of the Cambodia's most popular sports during the international event since there isn't enough government funding for sports.  However, this doesn't stop the BEA kids from coming up with their own ideas about how Cambodian athletes could prepare for Olympic training and how they could win their event. For this year's presentations, the Intermediate EFL course students chose sports that included running, swimming and kickboxing. In addition to designing a poster, students had to prepare an interview between "sportscasters" and "athletes" for the presentation part of the project. Once again, the BEA kids got "gold medals" for all their great effort!

Highlights from 2013-14: Debate Lessons

As one way to help our BEA kids improve their confidence in themselves and their public speaking abilities, Teacher Shally added debate lessons to our Advanced and Intermediate EFL courses throughout the 2013-14 school year. With our debates, students argued their positions in teams while two moderators supervised their performance. The BEA kids have to defend their positions with reasons and examples, which helps them to develop their critical thinking skills in both Khmer and English. There were a wide range of topics that were debated in our Friday lessons, but one of the most memorable was the debate on city verses countryside life -- with life in the countryside being the winning position.

Highlights from 2013-14: Teachers' Party

During the last week of classes for the 2013-14 school year, one of the most memorable events at BEA was our surprise "thank you party" for our two incredibly dedicated and hard-working teachers, Teacher Shally and Teacher Sarith. Unknown to both teachers, all the students and staff were able to organize the entire party without either of them finding out about the surprise party. This was especially tricky since we had to move all our tables and bookcases in the library, decorate, sign cards and set up the cake and drinks while Teacher Shally and Teacher Sarith were in their classrooms. While Nicole ran into town to get the cake and kept the teachers distracted from the party preparations, Sreynet and her crew were able to finish setting up for the party. When we called both teachers down to the library, they were completely shocked to be greeted with cheers and applause from all of their students.

One of the best photos from the 2013-14 school year. BEA classrooms are not just places of learning, they're also places of friendship.

Highlights from 2013-14: Dany's Decorating

One of our biggest tasks at the start of each new school year is redecorating our library and classrooms. To do this, our school assistant, Dany, takes on this huge task with the help of some of her friends at BEA. Since we had to move buildings last year, it was especially challenging since she had to start from scratch. However, as usual, she did another amazing job. We're looking so forward to seeing what she'll design this year throughout out rooms and corridors over the next few weeks. Here's a look back at her amazing work during the 2013-14 school year!
