To wrap up our Christmas Day festivities at BEA, the BEA kids got to enjoy some cake before they headed home after a fun-filled afternoon. It seemed that the students took more time taking pictures of the cake than actually eating it! Afterwards, we had a small Christmas staff party and gift exchange. For my gift, everyone got a "daruma" doll from Japan, which is one of my favorite traditions connected to the end of the New Year in Japan. It represents a small Buddha that grants wishes. To make your wish, you have to color in the one of the eyes and make a wish. Once your wish comes true, you color in the other eye. The doll also represents the Japanese spirit of "gambaru" (never give up). When the doll gets knocked over, it rolls back up again. Just like all of us at BEA with the many challenges we faced in 2014. Since this is the first time I've been in Cambodia for Christmas, I decided that the school should be decked out in its fullest with decorations and plenty of Christmas cheer. I usually haul everything on my motorbike, but a Christmas tree and two large boxes of decorations was too much of a feat for me - still not a local yet. Instead, I played it safe with a tuk-tuk rather than a precarious balancing act on my motorbike. After I put the tree together, I started stringing the lights and noticed that my librarian wanted to take over. Stringing up lights is a necessary evil for me - shouldn't really use "evil" when talking about Christmas, but it's the only phrase I could think of so late in the evening. Fortunately, hanging up ornaments is something I completely love. If I ever need lights up on a Christmas tree, Sreynet is the person I will always call. She had it done in less than an hour!!! We would all like to wish Teacher Sarith a very happy birthday! With her busy high school schedule Teacher Sarith still manages to put her best foot forward every day in her classes to help her students build their language skills and confidence. Here's a trip down memory lane at BEA during the 2013-14 school year! We appreciate everything you do for us, and are so proud of everything you've accomplished this year. Happy Birthday Teacher Sarith! It took a lot of planning, but the staff and I were able to pull off another surprise birthday party for Teacher Shally, BEA’s managing director and head teacher. Last year, we called him downstairs to the library for an “emergency,” and we were all waiting there for him with cake and decorations. This year was a bit more difficult because he was expecting another surprise. To avoid any suspicion about our plans, we told him that we’d have a staff lunch and cake for him before the start of teacher training – just as we do for the staff. This was our “fake” party. Once he started his last lesson for the day, I ran out to get his cake that I had already ordered a few days before, and Sreynet, BEA’s librarian, had students blow up balloons and sign birthday cards. In the middle of his lesson, we burst into his classroom with his cake and balloons. A complete surprise!!! Happy Birthday to the world’s greatest director and teacher – the one and only Teacher Shally! Although he tells us every year that he’d rather not celebrate his birthday, we never listen to him – but just in this situation. Every single one of us at BEA would like to wish you the best birthday ever and hope you get as much love and happiness as you have given all of us over the past year. We're so lucky to have you in our lives to inspire and guide us each and every day! You're simply the best Teacher Shally! Here’s a walk down memory lane since your last BEA birthday of a few of the many good times we've had together. What an amazing year, and this year will sure to be even more amazing!!! Despite the number of staff birthdays we've held over the past two years, we were still able to completely surprise Dany on her birthday. Most Cambodians don't celebrate their birthdays, so we wanted to make sure that Dany had a special day at BEA. This year, the teacher trainees also joined us in celebrating Dany's birthday with cake, and as usual, plenty of goofiness and laughter. Happy Birthday Dany! Everyone at BEA would like to wish Dany, our amazing school assistant, a very happy birthday! With her calm demeanor and strong work ethic, Dany makes BEA a beautiful place to study for the staff and students whether it's tidying up or decorating. We can't believe how quickly the time has passed since you first started studying and working at BEA! Here's a little trip down memory lane of all your hard work and the fun times we've had together at BEA during the 2013-14 school year! We appreciate everything you do for us, and are so proud of everything you've accomplished this year. Happy Birthday Dany! One of my best memories from the month of September was Chieu's surprise birthday. Chieu works incredibly hard as our school assistant, so we took a bit of break to give her a special day and to show her how much we appreciate everything she does for us. It's also a chance for the staff to satisfy their sweet tooth, something they don't really get the chance to do in their own lives. Finally, it's a chance for me to share my own culture - Canadian and Japanese - with the staff. One of my favorite things is the Japanese "shikishi" - a signboard that a group of people sign to give to someone on a special occasion.
