The Basic Course BEA kids were as busy as bees with their preparations for their group poster presentations this week. They had the first part of the week or design their posters and plan their presentations about the everyday activities of their own characters like teachers, monks, farmers, and among many others. Instead of presenting in front of the entire class, groups present in front rotating groups of 3-4 of their classmates. In this way, the BEA kids gradually build their confidence in public speaking from one presentation to the next. Students complete four presentations during the school year, two each semester, and it goes towards 20% of their final grade. Once again, Teacher Sarith has done an amazing job with helping her Basic Course students get ready for their presentations! Teacher Sarith was kept very busy this week with helping her Basic Course students with their poster presentation preparations. The theme for this presentation was "everyday activities." The BEA kids have to choose their own "Cambodian" character, such as a teacher, a monk, a noodle shop seller, and then describe their daily activities from the morning until the evening. The students also have to design a poster to illustrate these activities, which always shows off the students' creativity through their amazing artwork. The BEA kids love these projects because they can use what they've been taught in their language lessons, gain confidence through public speaking, and be exposed to a different type of teaching method (in teacher-talk, task-based language teaching). As usual, the BEA kids lent each other a helping hand and buzzed around with big smiles while planning their presentations and designing their posters. Teacher Shally and his Advanced and Intermediate course students have just finished up their cover letting and resume writing workshop, which is part of BEA's Job Hunting Skills Program. During the past two weeks, Teacher Shally taught ten intensive writing classes that included how to describe educational experiences, qualifications and qualities, as well as the differences between resume formats between Cambodia and countries like the Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. By the end of the two-week workshop, students turned in their own cover letters and resumes, which is 10% of their final grade for the second semester. As part of BEA's commitment to Cambodia's development in English language education, Nicole Takeda, BEA's executive director, is almost finished the school's first writing textbook that includes teacher-training lessons and student materials for Basic, Intermediate and Advanced courses. The textbook Cambodian content and is directly targeted towards Cambodian instructors that teach writing in university, public school or at NGO schools. The Pre-Intermediate BEA kids and Teacher Sarith have been buzzing around all week long getting ready for their group poster presentations about Cambodian illnesses and remedies. As part of the Pre-Intermediate course, students spend two weeks learning how to describe common illnesses and medicines for them, as well as how to give advice to their friends and foreign visitors when they are sick. After these speaking and listening lessons, students then prepare a group presentation in which they choose 4-5 Cambodian illnesses, such as malaria, dysentery, dengue fever, among many others, and then describe their symptoms and remedies for them. Such topics are part of BEA's program goals which include increasing awareness about health issues and connecting our language program to the daily lives of our students. As usual, Teacher Sarith did an amazing job preparing her students for these presentations and the BEA kids made her proud with their creative presentations. The Advanced BEA kids had an incredibly busy week getting ready for their group poster presentations on on job skills and qualifications. Students had to prepare a resume for a candidate applying for an assistant manager's position and then present their applicant's work experience and qualifications. BEA's presentation style is quite different from the typical presentation format. Instead of presenting in front of the entire class just once, students get the chance to present to small groups three times on presentation days. In this way, the students gain more confidence and build their fluency after each presentation. BEA's executive director, Nicole, recently wrote a book chapter that investigates the benefits of this type of language learning from the perspective of Cambodian students. Her chapter, titled "Bridging Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-Based Language Teaching in Cambodia," will be published in Hayo Reinders and Michael Thomas' Task-Based Language Teaching in Asia: Challenges, Opportunities and Future Directions before the end of the year. Power outages have been getting more frequent this year as temperatures continue to soar up into the high 30s. Despite the lack of lights and the sweltering heat, the BEA kids remain as dedicated as ever to their studies as you can see in their debate classes. Some of the students even stayed after their lessons to work on their poster presentations in the library! If you'd like to know why we're plagued with all these power outages, you can read about it in the Phnom Penh Post's recent article: EDC Under Pressure The Bayon English Academy (BEA) is an accredited NGO school that provides underprivileged youth with quality English language education and job skills in a safe, clean and professional environment in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
As part of BEA's job skills program, the Intermediate course students were busy with their poster presentations last week. For this project’s theme, students had to work as a group to design a resume for a student applying for an assistant manager's position. Before students broke off into their groups, they received two days of instruction on how to organize a resume and expressions for describing qualifications and experience. As usual, the BEA kids did a fabulous job working together and designing beautiful posters!
